Case
for Action
People living in poverty need services to help them improve the quality of their lives and increase their incomes. These include services that middle income populations take for granted: Lighting, motive power to increase income and reduce drudgery, smoke-free cooking technology, ready access to cooking fuel and clean drinking water, communications with family and markets, insurance, remittances, refrigeration for vaccines, and access to media and internet-based knowledge among others.
In most cases, governments and traditional development partnerships have been unable to scale provision of these services to the poor due to costs and competing priorities. However, innovative experiences have shown that these services can be provided on a sustainable (even profitable) social enterprise basis. These experiences form a kernel of innovation which now must be scaled up.
